FLORENCE, Ky. — With a winter storm on the way, the scramble is on to make everything is in order. That includes making sure your car is prepared to handle the elements.

What You Need To Know

  • Experts say preparing your car for winter weather can save you time, money and potenitally your safety

  • Proper tire tread depth is ideally 4/32 or more. It is essential in maintaining good traction

  • Check your tires, windshield wipers and battery
  • Pack an emergency kit with items such as blankets, snacks and a fully charged phone

Shannon Smith, owner of NRP Tire and Auto Service, has spent a decade keeping northern Kentucky vehicles roadworthy.

“Literally, the difference between a car in good shape and a car that breaks down on you at the worst possible time could be life and death,” Smith said.

Smith stressed that proper maintenance of your tires, windshield wipers and your battery can be the key to road safety.

As he inspected a truck, he said, "Making sure that you have at least 4/32 of tread, ideally six or more, will ensure that you’ve got adequate room to evacuate the slush in the snow and get a grip in this foul weather.”

He also recommends drivers pack an emergency kit in their vehicles.

“Have an emergency pack in your car with a blanket with some snacks. Make sure your cellphone is charged up,” Smith said.

Finally, Smith urged drivers to stay patient and practice road courtesy.

Taking a few simple steps now can make all the difference once the snow falls.
