Chicago native Ryan Hayes-Owens is a multimedia journalist with Spectrum News 1 in our northern Kentucky Bureau.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Shortly after, she received her master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she specialized in Video and Broadcast Journalism.

While pursuing her master’s, Ryan was a multimedia journalist, anchor and field producer for Chicago This Week on CAN-TV, Chicago’s Public Television station. Chicago This Week was nominated for Best College Student Production by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chicago Midwest Chapter. She was an awarded Editorial and Publishing Fellow for Medill Reporters, Chicago. Ryan also traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina on a reporting assignment, producing a mini documentary in Spanish about a young burn victim who received mural tattoos by international tattoo artist Diego Staropoli. In the Summer of 2023, Ryan was also a programming, promotions, and publicity intern at ABC 7 Chicago, the number one station in the city.

Ryan enjoys traveling to new places, getting to know the local community, and sharing stories.
