Louisville’s Metro Snow Team stands ready for whatever happens.

“The entire fleet, all members of Metro Snow Team are, have been put on alert.” said Salvador Melendez, Louisville Metro Public Works’ public information officer.

Since Tuesday, the team has worked to check equipment, attach plows and make sure everything’s working like it should on upwards of 200 pieces of equipment. From small to big trucks. There are more than 65 drivers.

“And all those drivers, basically when a snow event occurs, they will treat 110 snow routes, which totals over 2,700 two-lane miles of roadway,” Melendez said.

Louisville Metro Department of Public Works says they start every season with 38,000 tons of salt. Seventeen thousand tons are stored above-ground in domes. The rest is stored at Louisville Mega Caverns.

There is the potential for ice, and but the snow team is prepared.

“If we get below 25 degrees, we will add calcium chloride to the salt base to make sure that ice more becomes a slush, and it keeps the roads drivable,” Melendez added.

He said, “Our Metro snow team is committed to making sure that our roads are safe, so that you are safe.”

Public Works said the best thing drivers can do if they must on the roads is to slow down, plan and give the plows plenty of room to work.
