Thomas Gordon knows how to handle and work in winter weather. This is his 15th winter with public works.

“Fun! I really enjoy my job.” Gordon, a labor supervisor with Metro Public Works, said.

He’s been everything from an equipment operator to crew leader and now he’s overseeing crews. In the past, he enjoyed his time on the streets plowing snow.

“It’s cool to see the smiles on people’s faces when you come and clear their street and they can finally get out of their driveway. It is awesome to see kids mad that you’re coming down the street with a snow plow because they have to go to school the next day,” Gordon explained.

Since Tuesday, Louisville’s Metro Snow Team has worked to get ready for potential winter weather this weekend. The team will work around the clock to make sure over 2,500 two-lane miles in the Metro area are safe. They’ve got thousands of tons of salt on hand to work with. The work in the trucks can be dangerous.

“Absolutely yes,” Gordon explained. “They’re big trucks. They have a lot of blind spots. We can’t see everything. We don’t stop on dimes.”

It’s work done by teams of people, including behind-the-scenes, who are dedicated.

Gordon said “These guys are hard-working for one goal and that’s to make sure citizens, the public, stay safe.”

So, if you see them out and about, say thank you.

“Honk the horn, give us a wave. If you see us at Thorntons when we’re fueling up, thank them for their work,” Gordon said.

Gordon told Spectrum News 1 drivers should give plows plenty of room to work. Do not follow them too closely. He said if you have to be out on the roads, to travel safely. He said they are not done until the job is done.
