Mike Nade, a retired Bowling Green detective, is the treasurer of the local Fraternal Order of Police and said it’s every officer’s worst nightmare.

“When an officer is hurt that bad, it hurts deeply. It’s like a family member has been hurt,” Nade said.

Nade trained Davis when he first started with BGPD and said being an officer is in Davis’ blood.

“He has a deep compassion for the people; I saw him on numerous opportunities and calls and he would talk to people person-to-person and try to figure out what it was in their life was causing them to have these problems that the police were involved,” Nade said.

Nade says the FOP is supporting BGPD officers anyway they can and are collecting funds for Davis and his family.

“You can go into any Independence Bank and donate to the Officer Matt Davis Fund and that money will go directly to his family,” Nade said.

Davis was a member of the Kentucky Army National Guard and is a father of three boys. Nade described him as a proud father.

BGPD Chief Michael Delaney won’t comment on camera, but released a video statement Friday and thanked the community for its support.

“We will keep you updated on Officer Davis’ progress. As a matter of policy, the Kentucky State Police investigates any critical incident involving Bowling Green Police officers. Because of this, I won’t be releasing any information during their investigation,” Delaney said.

Delaney thanked the public for their prayers, calls and items dropped off at the station. Nade says community support keeps officer morale in better spirits.

“Those little things like that mean the world to these police officers,” Nade said.

Kentucky State Police is the lead investigating agency in this case, as is protocol for any officer involved shooting in the state.

There is also a BBQ fundraiser for Officer Davis and his family. It’s Thursday July 13 at the SoKY Marketplace from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. CT.
