LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police on Thursday released body camera footage from the shooting of a suspect who attempted to carjack two undercover Louisville police officers.
The suspect, identified as Mark Jaggers Jr., was shot and killed by police on June 19 in Louisville's Portland neighborhood. You can watch the body camera footage here. The footage is graphic and may be disturbing to some viewers.
LMPD Officer Matt Hayden was parked in an alley off of North 22nd Street when Jaggers, wearing a mask and holding a gun, opened the driver's side front door. Hayden fired several rounds before Jaggers fell to the ground.
While requesting other officers to respond, Hayden and other officers at the scene rendered aid to Jaggers for several minutes. The suspect was taken to UofL hospital, where he later died.
In a statement, Mayor Craig Greenberg, D-Louisville, thanked Kentucky State Police for their help in the investigation. "Any time a person loses their life like this it is a tragedy. In this case, it is clear from the video that the officer was protecting his own life from an armed assailant. He quickly called for help, rendered aid, and made sure to record the entire encounter by activating his body-worn camera." Greenberg said it was another example of why "we must keep guns off our streets."
The investigation of the shooting is ongoing, KSP Captain Paul Blanton said.
