LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Despite some obstacles, Officer Nickolas Wilt continues to progress in his recovery after being shot in the head in April.

In an update shared by the Louisville Metro Police Department, Wilt’s family shared that he had recently undergone a procedure to aid in his recovery. Despite a smooth procedure, the family said there were some post-surgery complications and one “concerning issue.”

Still, the family shared the LMPD officer bounced back and was sitting up in his chair, smiling with his family within 10 hours of the procedure.

The report also stated that Wilt continues to improve steadily every day, and that he “consistently meets the goals set by the staff,” in his rehabilitation.

Wilt has been under the care of specialists ever since he sustained the injury in the April 10 shooting at the Old National Bank in downtown Louisville. After undergoing surgery at UofL Hospital, Wilt received care at Jewish Hospital before being moved back for monitoring by the trauma team in the UofL Intensive Care Unit May 2.

The rookie police officer was part of the police team responding to reports of a shooting at the Old National Bank. As police exchanged gunfire, Wilt was struck in the head and went down before the shooter was killed by police.
