OWENSBORO, Ky. — With temperatures well below freezing, the city of Owensboro is under White Flag criteria, meaning shelters are open for overnight stays.
Road crews are hard at work keeping the roads in and around Owensboro clear of snow and ice.
“Really, if you look at the central eastern part of Kentucky, there is quite a bit more snow," said Corey King, state trooper. "But in this side of the state, more north, it’s a lot of ice.”
As the city puts in hours of work to clear roads, temperatures are going to be bellowing freezing for the next several days, causing the city to activate its White Flag criteria. This means all shelters are open, heated and have food.
One of the shelters is the Daniel Pitino Shelter, which will house people from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
“We have 20 to 30 people in there every night," said Harry Pedigo, director of the Daniel Pitino Shelter.
The shelter will also be serving meals.
The Owensboro Transit System will provide free bus transportation to the shelter between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“It saves a life or accommodates those who have been banned at local shelters," Pedigo said.
Shelters can be used for those who don’t have heat at their house. Pets can also stay at the shelter during White Flag nights.
