HENDERSON, Ky. — Thousands of people in Henderson are without power after the winter storm that swept through the commonwealth on Sunday.

Trace Stevens, the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Henderson, said, “Initially we had a quite bit of snow, followed by a little bit of sleet, and then it shifted over to freezing rain.”

The weather was so severe the Twin Bridges had frozen over.

Kentucky State Trooper Corey King said, “Historically, the twin bridges are always the first to freeze over, and that was the case this event.”

The weight of the ice brought down trees and power lines, knocking out power for thousands of people in the county.

Stevens said, “Personally, my power went out at about 9:00 p.m. last night.”

According to PowerOutage.us, a site that tracks power outages across the country, at one point showed at least half of the customers in Henderson were without electricity, including a Kentucky State Police post in the county.

King said, “Our post is running off of a generator right now.”

There is relief for those who don’t have electricity. The JFK community Center in Henderson is taking people in.

Stevens said, “There’s heat, there is water, there are showers.”

Other warming shelters in Henderson are The Salvation Army and the Harbor House Christian Men’s Center.
