LEXINGTON, Ky. — It’s the first snow of the season and the winter storm has covered much of the state in beds of snow and ice.
Kendrick Seawright said he’s checking out conditions and helping clear paths for downtown businesses.
“I just wanted to get out and see what was happening in the snow. But it’s still good. I’m enjoying it. This is the first little snow we’ve got,” Seawright said.
While many people are staying safe indoors, Seawright, who works with the Kentucky Theater, made it downtown on his electric scooter.
“So I’m just going real slow, so I’ll take my time. But it’s still bad. But I’m enjoying myself. I have to ride my bike,” Seawright said.
During the conditions, the city enforces its snow and ice control plan, where emergency responders and road management teams are on duty. On Friday roads were pre-treated with salt brine and beet-heet ahead of the snow.
Crews who are helping are working 12-hour shifts to cover specific routes organized by level ranking.
Hayward Wilkerson is the director of the Kentucky Theater. Wilkerson and the team started clearing out an entrance at 8 a.m. saying the theater is one of the few places that survive weather-related power outages.
“We don’t usually use power down here because the lines are buried. So it’s just a great warm, cozy place for people to come and get out of the snow,” Wilkerson said.
But as conditions changed, the theater, much like many businesses in the area, eventually closed for the day.
