LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The winter weather is putting a strain on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across the commonwealth.
One HVAC technician in Louisville said he’s working around the clock this week repairing furnaces.
The snow and below freezing temperatures are driving up demand for HVAC service technicians.
“No one wants to be without heat right now,” said Shawn Carroll, service technician at Bryant Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical.
Carroll has been working in the industry for around a decade.
“I like it, get to meet different people every day, different situations, different all different kinds of stuff,” he said.
On Jan. 6, 2025, he was checking out a furnace in a Fairdale home because it isn’t putting out any heat.
“Very busy, all the furnaces that weren’t serviced, or we didn’t check them are going to have probably issues,” Carroll said.
The service technician said the below freezing temperatures are adding strain to furnaces.
“So the colder it is, the more the furnace has to work and, if it has a problem, it’s going to show itself more when it has to run this much,” he said.
If you don’t have heat in your home, Carroll said there is a chance your pipes could freeze. He said many furnace problems start with a dirty filter.
“Just make sure your filters are changed, and it helps getting your furnace serviced before these temperatures. Just really just got to get it serviced and try and make sure you’re on time changing your filter, because your filter can cause a lot of issues,” he said.
Carroll said he will work well into Monday evening.
With temperatures struggling to get above freezing this week, Carroll said he is anticipating staying busy all week long.
