LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky win’s soccer remains a perfect 3-0 in the 2024 season after beating Detroit Mercy in the first match of a men’s/women’s doubleheader Aug. 22.
The Wildcats won their third straight with a scoreline of 2-0 after defeating both Central Michigan and Morehead State earlier this season. This is the first time in program history Kentucky has won the first three games of the season without conceding a goal.
Kentucky could not score in the first half, despite out shooting the Titans 14-1. The Detroit Mercy keeper fended off a multitude of crosses and corners to keep the game tied 0-0 at the half.
The Cats came into the half determined to break the deadlock, finally sinking their opening goal in just six minutes of play. Grace Hoytink carried the ball down the near flank and found Alexis Tylenda, who side-footed the ball past the Titans’ goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. It’s Tylenda’s second goal of the season and she currently leads all scorers on the team. Hoytink collected her first assist of the season.
Kentucky doubled their advantage at the 82-minute mark after being awarded a free kick on the near side of the box. Grace Phillpotts lofted a ball into the back post and found Michelle Moskau, who headed the goal in for her first collegiate goal. It was Philpotts’ second assist of the season and she now leads the team in that category.
The Wildcats kept the pressure up all match long, out shooting the Titans 30-1 with seven shots on goal to Detroit’s one. Kentucky also had a season-high 16 total corner kicks.
The Wildcats will close their season-opening home stretch of games this Sunday, Aug. 25, as they host Jacksonville State at 1 p.m. ET.
Kentucky men’s soccer went second in the doubleheader, nabbing a 3-2 win of their own over Oral Roberts.
