LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A second headstone is being engraved for the late Louisville basketball coach, Denny Crum.

The first one is sitting at the bottom of the Red Sea.

Crum’s widow, Susan Sweeney Crum, told Spectrum News 1, the family ordered a custom headstone to honor the Hall-of-Fame coach who died on May 9, 2023.

Sweeney Crum ordered a granite called “India Red” last fall, not realizing the stone would actually come from India.

She shared pictures of artisans working on the stone, creating intricate carvings, including one of Coach Crum’s signature jacket. 

While the headstone was on its way to Louisville, the barge it was on was attacked by Houthi pirates. The pirates pitched the headstone and sent it to the bottom of the ocean, which is between Africa and Asia.

Sweeney Crum ordered a new one, and it recently arrived it western Kentucky where it is being engraved. It will ultimately be placed at Cave Hill Cemetery.

Crum may not have been from Louisville, but there are few who are more associated with the city. From the Court at the KFC Yum! Center to a residence hall on the campus of UofL, to the thousands of lives he touched, Crum’s legacy will live on.
