LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Legendary Louisville basketball coach, Denny Crum will be honored by the University of Louisville men’s basketball program with a series of tributes at the season opener on Monday, Nov. 6.
Crum, who died on May 9, coached UofL for 30 years and brought the Cardinals its first two national championships. He was 86 years old.
The team will have a moment of silence before the game with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The game will take place at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center.
UofL will also permanently change Crum’s seat in section 106 to black and mark it in his honor. The black seat will distinguish it from the venue’s red seating. This is a similar gesture to what UCLA did to honor its Hall of Fame coach and Crum’s mentor, John Wooden.
The court at the KFC Yum! Center is already named for Crum. His family will be on hand for Monday’s festivities.
The Cards will have patches displaying Crum’s iconic red jacket on their uniform this season and the coaching staff will wear pins in his honor during the game. The team will also sport special shooting shirts during the pregame.
UofL says video tributes to the coach are planned throughout the evening and there will also be a clothing line, the Denny Crum Legacy Collection, coming soon. All proceeds will benefit the Denny Crum Foundation.
Crum was nicknamed “Cool Hand Luke” by former commentator Al McGuire and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on May 9, 1994. He helped bring Louisville NCAA Championships in 1980 and 1986, making him one of 14 coaches to win two or more titles. He took the Cards to the Final Four six times.
Tickets to Monday’s game are available online.
