LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Council will vote on the budget for this fiscal year tomorrow, June 20, 2024.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, D-Louisville, proposed his $1.1 billion budget in late April.
Some of the mayor’s top priorities are public safety, affordable housing and economic development.
Public safety investments could cost over $448 million. That’s a little over half of the entire proposed budget. That includes money for equipment to meet law enforcement standards, DNA homicide investigations, and new search and rescue gear for Louisville firefighters.
As Louisville Metro Police is facing a worker shortage, this budget would increase their pay in an effort to recruit and keep more officers.
Affordable housing is another portion of the budget
$32 million were proposed to go to creating 15,000 affordable housing units by 2027.
Dosker Manor and the Avenue Plaza could also get $238,000 to help residents with issues in their apartments. The Louisville Metro Housing Authority is considering tearing down the 56-year-old Dosker Manor building and rebuilding new housing at that location.
$50 million could also go to road paving, sidewalk repairs and guardrail replacements.
The mayor also hopes to finish the Louisville Loop with funding from this budget.
Free universal pre-k could also get some funding, if the budget is passed. Greenberg set aside $5 million dollars to a nonprofit that will create a path to pre-k over the next five years.
The metro council will vote on whether to adopt the budget at 6 p.m. during its regular meeting.
