FRANKFORT, Ky. — As Kentuckians clean up after historic flooding across the state, the Kentucky National Guard is running several resource distribution sites.
The Kentucky National Guard is supplying Frankfort residents with cases of water and storage-safe, ready-to-eat meals.
“I fell in love with it. I started volunteering for things like this. And once I got to see the community and what I can do with the guard, I’ve been in ever since, for 11 years,” Sgt. Justin Roy, U.S. National Guard said.
Roy joined the National Guard over a decade ago to advance his college education while protecting, serving and volunteering in his community.
His team is stationed at Lakeview Park on the east side of the city, operating a point of distribution site. A second point of distribution is on the west side of Frankfort at Juniper Hills Park.
“What they do, they kind of pull up here. We ask them how many family members and if they’re getting for other families. And if they are, we make sure that we get adequate food and water for everyone involved,” Roy said.
Roy said their mission includes working with local emergency and police services, providing these resources to families and ensuring resources are accessible to those who can’t get out.
“A lot of people didn’t have the power that wasn’t able to get out and get food and water. But everybody came through. We’ve been able to get them the food and water they need for them and the other family members.” He said. “And then some people will come and get it for other people that can’t get out because they’re hit harder with the floods. So they’ve been very appreciative of everything we’ve been doing.”
The Kentucky National Guard’s Lakeview Park distribution site is open daily from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. while flood recovery is needed.
