NEW ALBANY, Ind. — An investigation is underway in New Albany, Indiana, after a police officer was shot.

The incident began when New Albany police responded to a reported shooting between a man and a woman. When officers arrived at the scene, they found no one was hurt.

A foot pursuit between the male suspect and a police officer began, and the suspect fired at the officer. The officer returned fire. Both the suspect and officer were hit.

The suspect ran, and according to Indiana State Police, Sgt. Carey Huls, officers searched for the suspect for approximately a half hour to an hour. The unidentified man was found hiding outside of a nearby home.

Both the reported shooting and the officer-involved shooting happened in the area around Main, Spring, 13th and Vincennes streets. 

The police officer was taken to University of Louisville hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was also taken to UofL hospital. His condition is unknown, but Huls believes his injuries were also non-life-threatening. 

According to a City of New Albany Facebook post, the suspect is a 25-year-old man.

ISP is handling the investigation, but multiple agencies were involved, including New Albany police, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, SWAT, Clarksville police and Jeffersonville police.

Sgt. Huls said the investigation is just getting started. He said there would be a lot of interviews to conduct, including with residents in the area who witnessed what happened. The names of the police officer and the suspect aren’t being released yet.

This shooting comes a week after Scott County, Kentucky Deputy Caleb Conley was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on May 22 and just over a month after Louisville Metro Police officer Nick Wilt was shot during the attack at the Old National Bank.
