Conley was known for being a hard-working and dedicated officer. Sgt. Robert Tackett was his direct supervisor throughout his first three years with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and was among those who witnessed his dedication.

“He was very committed to his job,” said Tackett. “I’ve never met anyone in my entire life that wanted to be a law enforcement officer more than Caleb Conley did. I’ve never met anybody that deserved to carry a badge more than he did.”

Conley was with the department for four years, and before that had served with the U.S. Army for eight years. He was also invovled with the ROTC when he was in high school and his teacher, Bill Blackburn, remembers what it was like to have Conley in his class.

“He was great as a student, you know, he participated. He certainly was never a discipline problem. I mean, he always wanted to do the right thing, and he was always a perfect kid in class,” said Blackburn. “He just was a good kid all the way around.”

He was also a husband and a father, leaving behind his wife with two young children.

“I pray for the family, I care for the family and I wish them the best through this hard time but I know they can at least know how good a person Caleb was and how dedicated Caleb was to the community and to his job,” said Blackburn.

Tackett is encouraging people to donate to a GoFundMe that was created to help support his family through this devastating loss.

“We would really appreciate that for his family right now,” said Tackett.

Conley is the first deputy from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office that has been killed in the line of duty.

Blackburn wants him to be remembered for the kind of person he was.

“He was just the kind of young man that wanted to serve people, he cared about people, he was a very fair person,” said Blackburn. “Life for Caleb wasn’t about Caleb, it was about everybody else.”
