According to the information released, there was a 39% reduction in homicides between Jan. 1 and March 31 of this year compared to the same timeframe in 2023. This year, the city saw 23 homicides in that time, while 2023 saw 38. In addition, non-fatal shootings were down by 27%.

While addressing the media Tuesday, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, Mayor Cavalier Johnson and office of community wellness and safety director Ashanti Hamilton all pointed to several programs aimed at increasing community involvement in reporting crime and conflict resolution programs as playing a role in the declining numbers.

While Norman said he was pleased with the reduction in violent crime, he said more work needs to be done.

“As long as we continue to have these issues, we need to continue to delve into what are the drivers that we are seeing contributing to this. Accessibility of firearms — we are seeing some of those numbers involve negligence. Firearms being left out for our young ones to get a hold of. That is unacceptable,” said Norman.

Between January and March, car thefts in the city were also down year-over-year, with 1,295 thefts reported. That number down around 50% compared to the same period in 2022.
