RACINE, Wis. — Maurice Robinson, the police chief of the Racine police department, said an officer shot and killed a man in Racine on Friday.
“The City of Racine has experienced a 49% increase in ‘shots fired incidents’ and six gun homicides this year. In an effort to curb the gun violence, Racine police have been executing search warrants on identified vehicles and persons," Robinson said.
At 1:03 p.m., a Racine police officer made a traffic stop on an “identified vehicle,” Robinson said.
Robinson said a man fled the car on foot. The man was armed with a handgun, according to police.
Robinson said the police officer, whom he did not identify, gave the man multiple orders to “stop and drop to the ground” as the officer followed him on foot. Robinson said the officer followed the man over a fence and up a hill.
“The armed man refused all commands and took an action that resulted in the pursuing officer discharging his service weapon,” Robinson said.
Officers responded and attempted to save the man who was shot, but he died, according to Robinson.
Robinson said he will not release the victim's name until he has confirmed next of kin are notified.
Robinson confirmed the incident was recorded on a body camera. Footage will be given to the district attorney’s office. The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and the Wisconsin State Patrol are conducting an investigation of the incident. The Wisconsin State Crime Lab is processing the scene, according to Robinson.
Robinson said the officer who shot the armed man has been placed on administrative leave.
