MILWAUKEE — On Wednesday, Milwaukee leaders gave an update on where crime stands in the city.

Overall, the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) said homicides, robberies and auto theft were all down this year compared to 2023.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman addressed the alarming number of kids and teens involved in firearm-related incidents.

“As a parent, this makes my heart hurt. These acts of violence must stop. MPD works with a number of partners to stop this type of dangerous behavior, but let me be clear: MPD arrests when needed — holding parents and caregivers accountable,” said Norman.

Norman also talked about an increase in carjackings and shared a simple thing drivers in the area can do to avoid becoming a victim.

“I want to encourage everyone to get off your phone and be aware of your surroundings,” said Norman.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also talked about the recent comment allegedly made by former President Donald Trump, when it comes to crime in Milwaukee.

“There are some individuals on the national stage that said this city and other cities around the country are crime-ridden and I can say we are a much safer city than where we were just last year and much safer than where we were just two years ago,” said Johnson.

“Once again, crime numbers in Milwaukee are showing really positive movement. Milwaukee is a safer city,” Johnson added about crime in the city overall.
