CINCINNATI — Spring is unfurling across the Buckeye State.

As trees and flowers begin to bud, there are some blossoms in southern Ohio you won’t want to miss.

Ault Park in Cincinnati said its weeping cherry trees are finally beginning to open.

According to Cincinnati Parks lore, 1,000 Japanese Cherry blossom trees were given to the city in the 1930s as a gift to Mayor Russell Wilson. Parks staff have planted additional trees over the years to maintain the grove. In 2008, the Japan America Society added 121 Somei Yoshino Trees.

Cincinnati Parks said peak bloom for the trees is estimated to fall between March 23 and March 27 this year.

To locate the tree grove, when entering Ault Park on Observatory Road, the Higan Cherry tree grove can be seen on the hillside slopes planted by Cincinnati Parks staff. Continuing toward the park intersection of Observatory Road and Observatory Circle, visitors will find the Japanese Cherry blossom tree grove near Ault Park Commons.

The department said as of March 10, Ault Park Valley Trail will be closed to address serious stream erosion issues. Access from Old Redbank Road, the eastern side of Bur Oak Trail and Ridge Trail will also be closed. However, the portion connecting Observatory Avenue to Ridge Trail and Tree Trail will remain open.

Bloom time typically lasts about a week for these trees.
