OHIO — This weekend marks the beginning of spring wild turkey hunting seasons, a tradition that has taken place since 1966.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said the 2024 youth hunting is Saturday and Sunday. Ohio's regular seasons are divided into two zones: the south zone, which is open to hunters starting Saturday, April 20. Then there's the northeast zone — Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Trumbull counties — which opens Saturday, April 27.
ODNR said the limit is one bearded turkey.
Last year, hunters harvested 15,673 turkeys. Of those, 1,823 were checked by young hunters during the two-day season last year.
In 2023, these counties harvested the most turkeys:
- Ashtabula (454)
- Gallia (428)
- Muskingum (420)
- Monroe (410)
- Tuscarawas (408)
Hunters are also in luck this year; based on the Ohio Division of Wildlife's brood survey from over the summer, which collects information on young wild turkeys, they found more than average in the state.
