AKRON, Ohio — Following a high-profile mayoral race, Akronites cast their votes to elect Councilman Shammas Malik the city’s presumptive new mayor.

Malik is expcted to be sworn in as Akron’s 63rd mayor in January 2024.

  • Candidates Shammas Malik, Marco Sommerville and Tara Mosley maintained the lead throughout the night

  • Write-in candidates have until Aug. 28 to declare their candidacy for the November election

  • Several Summit County municipalities elected a mayor, and filled city council seats

Malik finished with 43.15% of the vote ahead of Akron Deputy Mayor Marco Sommerville who garnered 25.70% of votes. Councilwoman Tara Mosley finished with 17.47% of votes.

Write-ins for the office of mayor have until Aug. 28 to declare their candidacy before the November election, although their names would not appear on ballots, the BOE said.

Final election results for all Summit County races can be viewed on the BOE website. Election results are deemed unofficial until the BOE certifies them.
