AKRON, Ohio — In today’s primary election, Summit County voters were asked to make decisions about 62 races and 107 candidates, according to an online voter guide created by the League of Women Voters of Akron and Hudson, the Akron Beacon Journal and the Knight Foundation.

Summit County polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Following a high-profile mayoral race, Akronites cast votes for the city’s presumptive new mayor, who will be sworn in as Akron’s 63rd mayor in January 2024.

What You Need To Know

  • In the May primary election, Akronites cast votes for the city’s presumptive new mayor, who will be the city’s 63rd mayor

  • In early voting results, mayoral candidates Shammas Malik, Marco S. Sommerville and Tara L. Mosley are leading

  • Voters in several Summit County municipalities will elect a mayor, and fill city council seats and judicial and administrative positions

  • Write-in candidates have until Aug. 28 to declare their candidacy for the November General Election

Here’s how the candidates for Akron mayor, all Democrats, are faring in early voting percentages:

  • Mark Greer — 3.5%
  • Shammas Malik — 37.76%
  • Keith Mills — .64%
  • Tara L. Mosley — 17.78%
  • Joshua Schaffer — .44%
  • Marco S. Sommerville — 32.26%
  • Jeff Wilhite — 7.63%

With no Independent candidates joining Akron’s mayoral race in time to challenge the candidates in the primary, according to the BOE, there’s plenty of time for write-ins, who have until August 28 to declare their candidacy for the November election.

However, write-ins’ names won’t appear on November ballots, which need to be printed so they can be mailed to absentee and overseas voters before that date, the BOE said.

Also on Akron ballots for this primary are 13 Akron City Council seats — 10 ward and three at-large Council representatives.

Follow election results for all Summit County races on the BOE website. Election results are deemed unofficial until the BOE certifies them.
