A new report is laying out a plan to close Rikers Island as soon as possible.
The report was released by an independent commission appointed by City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.
It acknowledges that closing the jail complex by the law-mandated 2027 deadline is unlikely.
The report comes as the mayor has been adamant that the plan to close Rikers is not realistic as a federal judge considers whether to place Rikers in the hands of a federal receivership.
Former State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, the chair of the commission, and Jennifer Jones Austin, a member of the commission and the CEO of the nonprofit coalition Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to discuss the report.
