A report released last week by the nonprofit newsroom ProPublica details some troubling conduct of the New York Police Department’s Community Response Team.
Created in the fall of 2022, the CRT was billed as an elite unit and worked directly on Mayor Eric Adams’ public safety priorities, such as cracking down on illegal motorcycles.
But some officers within the NYPD raised warnings over the unit’s conduct.
Back in 2023, an officer with the CRT, Ramond Perez, pulled his police car across the yellow line and into oncoming traffic to stop a man on a motorbike.
That man was Samuel Williams. He died in the hospital soon after of injuries he sustained from the crash.
The family is now suing the city and the police.
Eric Umansky, who filed the report and also serves as editor-at-large with ProPublica, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall" Monday to discuss more.
