WORCESTER, Mass. – Leaders from 11 Massachusetts police departments, including Worcester and Pittsfield, are sharing their support for technology that detects gun shots.

The chiefs signed on to an open letter to the state's congressional delegation.

Earlier this year, Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, as well as Rep. Ayanna Pressley, sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, urging it to investigate federal funding of the acoustic gunshot detection technology. They said it may violate civil rights.

The police chiefs said the lawmakers may have been misinformed, and they drew conclusions that could compromise public safety.

They said ShotSpotter is effective, accurate and can save lives.
