SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England University hosted the Region 1 Massachusetts Science and Engineering Fair Friday.
Students from across the commonwealth were able to share their independent research projects while showcasing their scientific knowledge and advancements in the field.
The popular event goes back to 1949 and has played a big role in progressing science and engineering literacy opportunities for young scholars.
The afternoon followed with an award ceremony recognizing some of the stand out projects.
Spectrum News 1 spoke with one of the judges on how the work these students are doing will have an impact outside of the classroom.
"A lot of times the students say this can be information that consumers can use in their everyday lives," Rachel Quimby, judge for the Massachusetts Region 1 Science & Engineering Fair, said. "All the way up to ‘This is something that people who work in really sophisticated science labs in corporations or with the government,’ information that they can use.”
Quimby said people can expect the regional event to continue next year. The location for the next fair will be announced later on.
