Christmas Day will be mild this year with rain showers likely at times, so don't expect a white Christmas this year.
After a frigid Christmas last year with snow on the ground in many places, we will see quite a different picture this year. Let’s start with Louisville. Last year the high was only 23 degrees after a morning low of 12, but the year before was a record warm Christmas Day with highs in the mid 70s.
There was only an inch of snow on the ground last year, which is nothing compared to the snowiest Christmas back in 1890, when the city picked up over four inches of snow.
The high only made it to 22 degrees in Lexington last Christmas with a morning low of 9 degrees. There was about two inches of snow on the ground which is nothing compared to the snowiest Christmas of over six inches in 1935.
Just one year earlier a temperature of 70 degrees was hit on Christmas day.
Last Christmas in Covington was extremely cold with a high of only 17 and a low of 5 degrees. There was 2 inches of snow on the ground.
Ironically, Covington’s record snow on Christmas Day is lower than all the other climate locations across the state, coming in at just under 4 inches back in the early 1900s. The warmest Christmas was just two years ago, with a high of 69 degrees.
Bowling Green is often one of our warmer climate sites across the state, but that certainly wasn’t the case last year with a high of 24 degrees and a low of 11 above zero. There was only about an inch of snow on the ground last Christmas.
As was the case for most of the state, the warmest Christmas on record was two years ago in 2021 with a high of 76 degrees, which was one of the warmest temperatures in the state that day.
We may not be getting a white Christmas this year, but it will not likely be a dry day, so be sure to take an umbrella with you if you are heading out to visit family.
