LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of Louisville head football coach Jeff Brohm’s tradition of success started right here in Louisville.
Brohm and the entire Brohm clan may be the best-known sports families in Louisville, but their tradition of success didn’t start at UofL, it started at Trinity Catholic High School.
The hardware on display in the school’s rotunda is impressive.
“’85 State Championship, ’88 State Championship, ’89,” Jim Beckham said, scanning the school’s trophy case attached to Brohm.
Beckham is the vice president for development at Trinity High School Foundation. He’s also a former teammate of Greg Brohm. Beckham played center on the school’s 1985 football championship team.
“To have them back here, I know everyone was excited to have Jeff back and Brian and Greg and I think it’s only been amplified,” Beckham said.
While Jeff is UofL’s head coach, Greg Brohm is his Chief of Staff and the youngest Brohm, Brian, is UofL’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
The Brohms are a powerhouse of a sports family. In fact, it’s hard to overstate the lasting impact Jeff and his brothers have left on Trinity High School; Brohm memorabilia can be seen hanging on the walls by the weight room entrance.
“Named Kentucky’s Mr. Football in 1988,” Beckham said, reading the plague below Jeff Brohm’s framed high school jersey.
No doubt a head coach who wins football games creates a new level of excitement for any team, but the fact Brohm is winning at his college alma mater and in his hometown endears him and his family to a city in a way that no transplant can compete with.
“I think if you know the Brohms at all, all starting with the parents, but basically the whole family is they are incredibly hard workers on the field and off the field,” added Beckham.
The patriarch of the Brohm clan, Oscar, was a quarterback at UofL, as were Jeff and Brian. Greg was a three-year starter at wide receiver. There is a fourth Brohm, their sister, Kim. She lettered in three sports in high school: volleyball, basketball and softball at Mercy Academy and then competed in all three in college at Spalding University.
It’s easy to see why the Brohm family is so associated with sports in Louisville.
CORRECTION: In a previous version of this story, it was stated Jim Beckham played football with Jeff Brohm, it was actually his brother Greg.
