Parts of Louisville’s west end are bracing for another round of flooding this year.

The rain finally slowed down, but the Ohio River is rising with water engulfing the Shawnee Golf Course.

“For us, it means that we’re going to be closed down. For how long? We don’t know, but it looks like this storm is going to be awhile,” said Juan Mitchell, Head Golf Professional at the golf course.

Juan Mitchell has been in the golf business for 20 years. He runs a shop and teaches the sport.

“So Shawnee is my home, and this is one of my favorite places to be in,” he said.

You can find him running the shop and teaching the sport.

This Sunday is different because parts of the course are submerged, with more water on the way.

“As of right now, we’re projecting that it’ll get up to the concrete here, right by the car path where we put all the cars,” Mitchell said.

Mitchells said they moved trash cans and porta-potties off the course to prepare for the flood, but that’s all he can do.

“It’s very depressing, because this is the second time it’s happened, and it impacts business. So, we anticipate that this is going to stick around for a while and when it does, we lose revenue because we can’t open up a golf course,” He said.

Now Mitchell said he is waiting, watching and hoping the water doesn’t get as high as the National Water Prediction Service is projecting.

“Then we’ll keep watching and see when it’ll actually go down. So that’s the biggest part. So, until that happens, there’s nothing we can do. We just play a waiting game and wait for it to go down,” Mitchell said.

When the water finally recedes, Mitchell said he is expecting it to take several weeks before the greens are green again.
