LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) has partnered with Happy Home Furniture Bank and Schmitt Furniture to provide essential furnishings for people moving from Dosker Manor.
Dosker Manor, a senior and disabled public housing complex, has faced longstanding challenges. LMHA started voluntary relocations in July 2024. According to a press release, more than 230 households have successfully transitioned from the complex.
LMHA said many residents do not have adequate furniture because of past pest infestations or economic challenges.
“This collaboration is a crucial step in providing stability and dignity for former Dosker Manor residents,” said Elizabeth Strojan, LMHA executive director
Happy Home Furniture Bank and Schmitt Furniture will supply critical household items, helping residents establish safe and well-furnished living spaces.
The bank is accepting donations of new and gently used furniture and home furnishings at its warehouse at 252C America Place Drive in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Each household that qualifies will receive items such as a sofa, end table, kitchen table, chairs, bed frame, new mattress, bed linens and more.
Donation pickups may be arranged for a fee. A full list of accepted items is available online.
“We are honored and excited to be part of such a significant effort. We know we’ll need to deliver a lot of furniture over the coming weeks, so we’re eager to get the community involved to make this happen–to turn empty houses into homes,” said Christy Spence, Happy Home Furniture Bank executive director.
Residents who have been moved and need furnishings because of these circumstances must work with an LMHA case manager to receive help from Happy Home. Those who do not qualify for LMHA-funded furnishings may opt to use a portion of their relocation benefit—$500 per household—toward furniture through Happy Home.
