MADISON, Wis. — The UW-Madison women’s hockey team is on its way to the Frozen Four in the NCAA tournament.
The team pulled off a 4-1 win against Clarkson University on Saturday.
It was a slow start, with Clarkson leading the Badgers by one in the first period. Junior defender Caroline Harvey said the team had to calm down and shift their mindset in between the first and second periods.
“We probably didn’t put our best foot forward initially, but it’s okay,” Harvey said. “We knew we were going to come back, and we had it in us and we just had more effort to give, and we did that in the second period.”
And come back they did, scoring a total of four points over the second and third periods to earn their win.
Sophomore forward Kelly Gorbatenko said getting that win in front of the sold-out crowd of Badgers fans at LaBahn Arena made it extra sweet.
“With all the fans there cheering for us, you know, I love playing in LaBahn. It’s my favorite place to play ever,” Gorbatenko said. “So, [I] just kind of soak in that moment. Then, when the buzzer goes, just kind of run in and celebrate with my teammates.”
While the win means they’re heading to the Frozen Four in Minneapolis, it doesn’t mean the work is over yet.
“It’s just shift after shift, being consistent and starts Monday, as coach said, Monday's always calling,” Harvey said. “So yeah, we’re going to get right back to work.”
The Badgers have their eyes on the prize, with a potential eighth NCAA championship win on the horizon. If they achieve that, they’ll be the first school in the country to do so.
Harvey said she’s hopeful that Saturday’s win sets them up for success in Minneapolis.
“I feel like we’re in a great spot and everyone’s so excited and on the same page,” she said. “So, hopefully this momentum will carry over next weekend and we’re feeling confident, ready for whoever we have next.”
The Badgers are set to face the University of Minnesota in the Frozen Four on March 21.
