LEXINGTON, Ky. — Young people in Lexington are embodying the spirit of giving back during critical times.
Ice underneath piles of snow are still covering many sidewalks, streets and driveways around the commonwealth.
Demarious Young, 13, used his snow day to get rid of it. He's one of 10 young men Terry Dumphord, founder of the Voyage Movement, rallied for support. The group's website said it focuses on "uplifting and inspiring our youth to be leaders and examples for their peers."
“Some of them are young men," Dumphord said. "We've all had mentors previously. Some of them are people who just their parents answered the call when I put it out on Facebook."
In about two to three days, they’ve knocked out close to a dozen homes, prioritizing seniors and older individuals first.
Dumphord said a $1,500 gun violence prevention grant from Cities United has provided the necessary supplies to help. While the snow is abundant, so are the opportunities for young people to connect to their community and be productive, he added.
"How would they do it if they weren't getting compensated?" Dumphord said. "I don’t know. I know some of them, some of these guys were already shoveling snow two days prior before we started,”
Young said he also volunteers with his parents for community events.
Dumphord said as long as the participants are out of school, they will continue to help in several areas.
