LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Cardinals are headed to the Lone Star State this New Year's Eve.
Louisville Football (8-4, 5-3 ACC) will face Washington (6-6, 4-5 Big Ten) in the Sun Bowl Tuesday, Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. Kickoff time is 2 p.m. eastern.
It's the Cardinals' fourth straight season playing in a bowl game and second under coach Jeff Brohm, who will look for his first bowl win after falling 42-28 to USC in the 2023 Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
This will be the program's second appearance in the Sun Bowl, beating Drake 34-20 in the 1958 game. It will be Louisville's first-ever game against Washington.
The team started 2024 on a high note with nonconference wins over Austin Peay and Jacksonville State and Georgia Tech in their ACC opener before losing three of their next four games, including losses to conference opponents SMU (Oct. 5) and Miami (Oct. 19). They then won four of their next five games, including a 41-14 Governor's Cup win Nov. 30 against Kentucky, snapping a five-game losing streak to UK. A win over the Huskies would give them a three-game win streak to end 2024.
Redshirt senior quarterback Tyler Shough finished with 3,195 passing yards and 23 touchdowns, passing for more than 300 yards four times. The Cardinals are led by the likes of running backs Isaac Brown and Duke Watson and wide receiver Ja'Corey Brooks on offense.
Brown was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie and Offensive Rookie of the Year with 1,074 yards and 11 touchdowns, becoming the first true freshman to run for more than 100 yards in program history and breaking Lamar Jackson's freshman rushing record.
Key contributors on defense include linebackers TJ Quinn and Stanquan Clark, who led the team with 79 and 74 tackles, respectively.
The Huskies had an up-and-down season in their first in the Big Ten, defeating then-No. 10 Michigan back on Oct. 5 before losing four of their last six while defeating Big Ten rivals USC (Nov. 2) and UCLA (Nov. 15). They were led by quarterback Will Rogers, who threw for 2,514 yards and 14 touchdowns.
