LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 5 University of Louisville volleyball team pulled off a season-opening 3-1 upset of No. 3 Wisconsin Tuesday night in the KFC Yum! Center.

The Cards were the second match in the AVCA First Serve Showcase, following No. 9 Kentucky’s loss to No. 2 Nebraska in the first match of the evening.

Charitie Luper had 11 kills and Anna DeBeer added 10 to lead the Cardinals over the Badgers. The team moves to 1-0 on the season with the 18-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-20 win. It marks the first victory over Wisconsin since 1985 and was a rematch of the NCAA National Semifinals in 2021, which the Badgers won 3-2.

Louisville got off to a rocky start in the first set, falling behind 7-2 early and could not overcome Wisconsin’s hitting and four blocks. The Cards’ hitting heated up when Reese Robins had three kills to spark her squad.

Two Cardinals were selected for the 2024 AVCA First Serve All-Star Team: Luper was named Best Outside Hitter and Elena Scott was named Best Libero.

In the first match of the night, No. 9 Kentucky fell to No. 2 Nebraska 3-1. It was the first volleyball match of the 2024 season across the country and ended 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20.

Nebraska started strong and rode a late wave of momentum to take a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats responded with a 25-22 win, but Nebraska took the final two sets to win the match 3-1.

Brooklyn DeLeye led the Cats with a match-high 19 kills. She also had six digs and a trio of blocks in the match. Erin Lamb had 14 terminations in the match, with three service aces to go along with it.

Kentucky had one player selected for the 2024 AVCA First Serve All-Star Team: DeLeye was named Best Opposite.
