LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two new defense attorneys are on the case in the death and disappearance of Crystal Rogers.

What You Need To Know

  • One of the three suspects in the Crystal Rogers case has new attorneys

  • Darren Wolff and Zach Buckler now represent Steven Lawson
  • Lawson fired his lawyer, Theodore Lavit, earlier this month
  • Another hearing is scheduled for Oct. 4 to resolve several motions

Darren Wolff and Zach Buckler now represent Steven Lawson, who fired his lawyer, Theodore Lavit, earlier this month.

Steven and his son, Joseph Lawson, are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with evidence. A third defendant, Rogers' former boyfriend Brooks Houck, is charged with murder.

Wolff told the court Aug. 22 they’ll need more time ahead of the scheduled trial, set for Feb. 2025. He argued they just got the case almost 48 hours ago and now have to sift evidence that the commonwealth’s attorneys handed over.

"We literally got appointed to this thing," Wolff said. "We’ve been given two terabytes of information, which clearly is more than most cases, and the investigation in this case has strung on for an extensive period of time."

"I think it would be important to at least put the court on notice that I’m not 100% positive that we are going to be prepared to try the case at the time period this court currently has scheduled for that. And it shouldn’t be a surprise to the court. We’ll, of course, put anything that we need to in writing and file the appropriate motions, but I don’t want to come here today and basically put anybody in an illusion that this is just going to continue as originally planned."

Judge Charles Simms said three people have been in jail, so it’s important to him to have cases handled quickly and efficiently in time.

For now, all three men are scheduled to be tried together come February. There is a motion filed to determine whether the cases should be tried separately.

Another hearing is scheduled for Oct. 4 to resolve several motions.
