LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Storms that roared through Louisville in July hurt a Louisville nonprofit trying to help gather needed supplies.

What You Need To Know

  • Storms destroyed SOS International's only delivery truck

  • The group helps organizations across Kentucky, southern Indiana and the world

  • They collect and distribute medical resources and offer training

  • Insurance is only covering a portion of the truck's replacement cost

SOS International, which collects surplus medical supplies and equipment and distributes them to those in need here and around the world, lost its only delivery truck. The 16-foot box truck was damaged beyond repair and is critical to the collection and delivery of medical items. The items are taken to social service agencies, shelters and clinics across Kentucky and southern Indiana.

SOS also uses the truck to make back-to-school deliveries. Besides medical supplies, SOS also offers health career training that, according to the organization, impacts “more than 13,908 students” in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

SOS says the estimated cost to replace the truck is $80,000 and insurance will only cover a third of that cost.

The organization is paying for a rental truck to continue its work and meet what it calls the “community’s critical needs.” The group is asking for the community’s help with this expense. Anyone interested in making a donation can do on the organization’s website.

Since 1993, SOS has recovered over $66 million in medical resources and redistributed them to over 108 countries and 300 community organizations across Kentucky.
