COVINGTON, Ky. — Devou Park's Drees Overlook has undergone an impressive revamp, offering a beautiful view of both sides of the river. The enhanced scenery is drawing visitors, locals and photographers.
The sound as the camera shutter clicks captures the essence of a moment. Veteran photographer Patrick McNamara said the view of Northern Kentucky has much to offer.
As he grabbed his equipment from his car, he eagerly walked toward the overlook. McNamara said he often attempts to share the essence of the region and its people, offering to snap photos of visitors and influence others to come check it out.
"I love tourism because it not only is a platform for me to help show my perspective to people, but I also get to experience and learn so much on my shoots," he said.
In 2022, Barbara Drees-Jones, the daughter of Ralph Drees, proposed to revitalize the park’s overlook pavilion to the Covington Commission. After a year of construction, the new Drees Overlook was unveiled Aug. 7, welcoming everyone back to the park.
The addition of a picnic area and an observation patio with swings, reminding locals of the wonders of the city, represented a $1 million investment.
"My husband and I came Sunday night with some food," said Ellen Collett, visitor. "We ate at one of these tables, we swung on the swing and we've got some nice panoramic views with all the buildings in Covington and Cincinnati. It (is) just great.”
McNamara captured park visitors’ photos, showcasing the beauty of both the people and the scenery.
"I think, obviously, Kentucky has the best view of Cincinnati, which is unique," McNamara said. "This is probably the best shot in town, to just take in the skyline.”
