LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On June 4, the first day Louisville families could visit one of three bulk meal sites offered by Jefferson County Public Schools, all three ran out of food.
There are more than 90 walk-in meal sites across JCPS open each weekday during the summer to children 18 and younger. One of those is at Cane Run Elementary, where Zonetta Thomas spent Tuesday helping her mother, Kimberly Thomas.
Kimberly runs a small daycare and uses the meal site. She said she'll typically bring her children several times weekly.
“It helps me out because it’s a day I don’t have to cook, but it’s good for the kids to get out and do a little something before we go back into the daycare,” Kimberly said.
While sites like this have been running for several years, the three weekly "bulk" drive-thru sites are new this summer. Families can pick up 10 prepackaged meals per child if they cannot visit a location like Cane Run Elementary.
All three locations ran out of meals, resulting in families being turned away. Edington said the demand was much higher than anticipated.
"We regret we ran out of meals so quickly," said Terina Edington, executive administrator of nutrition services at JCPS. "In 25 minutes, we served 5,500 meals today."
JCPS has a new plan going forward, Edington said.
“Next Tuesday (June 11), we are doubling the number of boxes we have available," Edington said. "I’m hoping those (who) didn’t receive a box today will definitely come back out next week and people will join us for summer feeding."
Until then, any family can visit one of the dozens of daily walk-in sites found throughout the district. The three bulk sites are at Beckley Park, the World Prayer Center on Billtown Road and at the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Training Center on Greenwood Road.
