GEORGETOWN, Ky. — One year ago, tragedy struck the Scott County Sheriff’s Office in Georgetown. Deputy Caleb Conley was shot and killed May 22, 2023, conducting a traffic stop in Scott County.
Officers from various central Kentucky police departments gathered at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office in Georgetown on Wednesday for a barbecue to celebrating Conley’s life and service. Sergeant Robert Tackett said Wednesday was a rough morning.
“There’s been a lot of tough days over the last year. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wake up emotional this morning,” Tackett said.
Conley was shot and killed one year ago conducting a traffic stop off I-75 in Scott County. Tackett said Conley was a great officer, husband and friend.
“There’s a huge void in this department with Caleb gone. It’ll never be filled by anyone. Obviously, there’s a void in his household still that’ll never be filled by anyone,” Tackett said.
To honor his legacy, his wife started the Caleb Conley Foundation. It supports families of Kentucky police, fire and EMS personnel who die in the line of duty or were injured on the job.
“By purchasing tee shirts, sweatshirts, anything that we have or just by simply donating you’re helping support other Kentucky families,” said foundation director, Andrew Doyle.
Doyle said since it launched in September, the foundation receives orders and donations every week and continues to get support at various events in the area.
“Caleb would give the shirt off his back for anybody and if that’s the littlest thing we can do is just saying here’s some extra money, then that’s what we want to do,” Doyle said.
Tackett and the department carry out his legacy by continuing to do what he loved doing.
“All we can do is just continue to do our job with integrity and serve the citizens of Scott County and that’s the best way to honor Caleb in my opinion,” Tackett said.
Conley was a deputy for four years in Scott County and also served the country in the U.S. Army.
The man charged with killing Conley will stand trial next year.
