LEXINGTON, Ky. — Communities around central Kentucky are coming together to pay their respects to the Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Monday.
From Georgetown to Cynthiana, it was a day of mourning for many in central Kentucky, especially for people connected to Deputy Caleb Conley and his family.
On Tuesday, people packed the streets for the deputy’s return to Harrison County, the place where he was born and raised.
Teresa Crump, with Living Hope Assembly of God in Cynthiana, knew close relatives of Conley and expressed her sadness at his tragic passing.
“I knew his family that way, but this hits home because I lost my nephew two years ago, who was on the Georgetown police,” Crump said.
Kentucky State University campus police officer Andre Higgins, a Georgetown native, said he spoke to Conley from time to time.
Higgins says it’s a hard time for those in the field.
“For somebody as young as he is to lose his life over something, that was only him doing his job. So it’s going to be hard to recover for anyone that knows him,” said Higgins.
Crump said right now, the church hopes they can help this community grieve.
“We try to be there for them, we want to be there for them. And we don’t know what to do sometimes, but we’re here for prayers if we have to,” she said. Crump also said the congregation will continue to support everyone who needs it.
Funeral arrangements for Conley have not been made public yet.
