LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Noe Middle School has won the 2024 Governor's Cup for middle schools, Kentucky's premier academic competition.

Finals of the statewide competition took place March 8-11 in Louisville, with Noe winning the contest for the first time. More than 15,000 middle school students competed in multiple rounds of the competition, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) said.

"I am so proud of our students," said Jennifer Cave, Noe's principal. "Winning this competition for the first time is an honor for our school. The students worked hard, displayed great sportsmanship and represented Noe and JCPS well."

Students and teams were scored in three main categories: Quick Recall, Written Assessment and Future Problem Solving.

Noe's Quick Recall team, coached by Richard VerWiebe, finished in first place. Members include Amelia Albers, Henry Braden, Meredith Calhoun, Neha Chakkaran, Kevin Decker-Monsour, Maylin Kidwell, Tyler Martin, Sylvia Mason, Patrick Morrison, David Noles, Hunter Sauer, Ryleigh Sitgraves, Prisha Soni, Eli Wright and Sydney Yowell.

The following Noe students were also successful in the content assessments, JCPS said:

  • Helen Bai - Fifth in Mathematics
  • Braden - Eighth in Social Studies
  • Caitlin Casey - Ninth in Composition
  • Mason - Second in Composition
  • Noles - Second in Language Arts and Arts and Humanities 

JCPS said Noles also won Individual Quick Recall and finished second on the General Knowledge Exam while Kidwell finished fifth on the General Knowledge Exam.
