FRANKFORT, Ky. — LIFE House for Animals started a new and unique program that was quite successful on its first day. The rescue opened its doors 20 years ago and has adopted out over 5,000 animals during that time.

  • On the first day of the new program, all 15 dogs were paired with people to spend a few hours with them. Two of those dogs were adopted 

Because of the success of its summer program, “Fit with Fido”, the “Check Me Out” program was created for the wintertime. The “Fit with Fido” program allowed people to take dogs for about an hour to walk them.

The “Check Me Out” program shares some similarities. It consists of volunteers talking with participants to pair them with the most suitable dog. The rescue provides supplies and suggests ideas such as to take dogs to a park, go for a pup cup, or just hang out at home. People had the opportunity to take dogs out for up to three hours.

All 15 dogs that were available for the program were paired off in less than 30 minutes.

“The purpose is two-fold,” said Meredith Plant, the promotions volunteer for LIFE House. “First, to give the dogs an opportunity to get out of the shelter for a little bit, try them out with maybe some other dogs or see how they do with socialization out and about so spoil them for a little bit, but our other purpose is, well if you happen to fall in love with a dog and would like to adopt it, we can make it happen.”

Two participants ended up adopting the dogs that they got paired with and volunteers were thrilled.

The “Check Me Out” program will take place again on Feb. 17 and 24.

LIFE House relies on fundraisers and donations to care for its animals. The rescue will host a “Murder Mystery Dinner” on Feb. 10 and “The Fast & Furriest 5K” on Feb. 25.
