LEXINGTON, Ky. — A big college football weekend is on tap as both the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville football teams look to continue their undefeated seasons.

The two programs are 5-0 at the same time for the first time and it’s only the third time since 1936 that both teams are ranked in the Top 25 in the same week.

The UK Wildcat football team is off to a 5-0 start for the third time in the last five seasons under coach Mark Stoops. Recent success of the program is keeping fans’ interest on the football field longer at a historic basketball powerhouse.

At Commonwealth Outfitters, Kentucky blue is always popular, even more so in times of success.

“The better the Cats do, people are so happy about it. It’s just been great this year. People have been coming in and buying all kinds of gear for the games,” said Kaley Castle with Commonwealth Outfitters.

And you can’t do much better than a 5-0 start and being ranked in the Top 25 ahead of a major showdown with the top-ranked team in the country, the Georgia Bulldogs.

“We love the UK, we love how great they’re doing this year. Big improvement from over the years,” Castle said.

The now No. 20 ranked Cats are coming off an upset win against Florida at home this past Saturday. Castle said custom “Kentucky Fried Gator” shirts are selling fast.

“We do it for a lot of the opponents, especially the big names like Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. Those will be good ones too,” Castle said.

Ahead of the big SEC showdown, the UK Alumni Association is chartering a bus trip to Georgia for game day.

“Alumni love football season. It’s always a great way to bring them back to campus but also engage them on the road,” said Vice President of Alumni Engagement at UK Alumni Association Jill Smith.

Smith said they have nearly 70 alumni clubs throughout the country that host basketball and now more football watch parties.

“People are not thinking about basketball as early as they normally have or as we’ve seen in some years,” Smith said.

UK vs. Georgia kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday night on ESPN.

The Cats’ next game at home at Kroger Field is Saturday, Oct. 14 against the Missouri Tigers who are also off to a 5-0 start.
