“IRONMAN is such an iconic sports event. It’s one of the most well-known lifestyle brands around the entire world and to have it back in Louisville is so important,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, D-Louisville.

IRONMAN 70.3 consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and a 13.1-mile run.

Reggie Garcia, a leader of a local triathlon team called Tri Loco, says many of his teammates are excited about IRONMAN’s return to Louisville.

“It gets a huge percentage of our teammates together to race. With approximately 45% of our athletes in Louisville, 45% in Indianapolis, some in Michigan, Florida and Colorado, it gives us a chance to get together in one of the hometowns,” Garcia says.

The event is also referred to as a “70.3,” the total mileage the athlete will swim, bike and run.

Barry Stokes, the owner and founder of BarryS Coaching, says though the race may sound daunting, you don’t have to be superhuman to be an Ironman.

“I like to think of it as ordinary people doing extraordinary things. So getting off the couch, you know — soon — and getting to work your fitness levels and overall strength training can help ordinary people do extraordinary things, and get them to the finish line,” Stokes said.

IRONMAN 70.3 Louisville will take place on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024.

Registration opens Wednesday, Sept. 27.
