LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville Metro Police officer was shot while conducting a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Kentucky St. in the Chickasaw neighborhood around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Louisville Metro Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel.

The shots were fired from a nearby home while the traffic stop was being conducted.

The officer was shot in the upper torso area and a supporting officer, who also responded to the traffic stop, discharged his weapon. The other officer was not injured.

LMPD said residents were clear to return to their homes and activities in the area late Thursday afternoon. In a statement police said they were questioning several people of interest.

Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he and his wife Britainy were praying for the officer.

“Our hostage negotiation team, SWAT and other support are currently on scene at the house where the shots were fired at the officer,” LMPD said in an update posted on X.

The injured officer, whose name has not yet been released, has been with the department for a year and a half and is in critical, but stable condition at University of Louisville hospital according to the department’s update.

Louisville Metro Police said there is body camera footage that will be made available within 10 business days.

LMPD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the anonymous tip line at -LMPD (5673). They say no piece of information is too small or insignificant.

This is the latest incident of a police officer being shot. In July, Bowling Green po-lice Officer Matt Davis was critically wounded after being shot responding to a complaint at a Bowling Green car dealership. The suspect in that incident, Esteban Lowery, was killed.

On April 10, LMPD Officer Nicklaus Wilt was shot when he and his partner responded to a shooting at the Old National Bank in downtown Louisville. He as critically wounded, having been shot in the head. He continues to recover from his injuries.
