LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four weeks after he was shot in the head while responding to the mass shooting at Old National Bank, LMPD announced that Officer Nick Wilt has made some promising recovery. Wilt has been taken off the ventilator and other life-support equipment.
Wilt is also showing neurological improvement and is able to follow some commands, police said in a Facebook post Monday evening.
"Officer Wilt's condition has been improving steadily all week, and he remains on the correct path to recovery," the post reads.
Although he still has pneumonia and other lung complications, LMPD called his progress up to this point "remarkable." The rookie officer had been in a coma for weeks.
Doctors are working toward getting Wilt into Neuro Rehab, LMPD said, which would mark another significant milestone in Wilt's remarkable recovery process.
Wilt was part of the police team responding to reports of a shooting at the Old National Bank on Monday, April 10. As police exchanged gunfire, Wilt was struck in the head and went down before the shooter was killed by police.
He was rushed to UofL Hospital where he underwent brain surgery and remained in their care until he was moved to Jewish Hospital.
