LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department announced an increase in COVID-19 cases as a new variant spreads through Kentucky. The department reported 264 lab-confirmed cases last week, compared to 38 per week in July and 106 per week in early August.
These numbers are relatively low compared to a year ago, when the health department was reporting 887 new COVID-19 cases per week.
Hospitalizations also remain low, with nine new admissions reported last week.
The health department pointed to an updated COVID-19 vaccine/booster being developed to combat the new strain. They encouraged anyone who has not yet been vaccinated to get a COVID-19 vaccine by same-day appointment at the Public Health Clinic at 650 Newtown Pike. You can call 859-288-2483 to schedule your appointment.
Officials also encouraged people to wear a well-fitted mask or face covering in public areas.
You can also help slow the spread of COVID-19 by:
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick, especially those with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, muscle/body aches, loss of taste/smell, nausea, etc.)
- Covering coughs and sneezes
- Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
